Center Greenhouse to receive Centennial Farm Status!

Center receives Centennial Farm Status

We were honored to be a part of the Colorado Day Kick-Off Event, the 2014 Choose Colorado Tour, and receive recognition as a new member of the Centennial Farms program honoring families that have owned and operated the same land for more than 100 years. We will be officially inducted into this program at the state fair August 22nd.  As members of Centennial Farms, it is our duty to support the current and future generations of growers, farmers, and ranch families like ours.   We are excited to be a part of this program and will always be Colorado Proud!

Power Flowers at Colorado Day Centennial Farm Choose Colorado kick off

  • Our ground was settled in 1889 by our ancestor Pietro Yantorno (aka Pete Center) and was used for row-farming.  His son August worked with him on the farm growing celery, lettuce, cabbage, and other vegetables for the local market as the family’s main income source.
  • In 1950 our first greenhouses were built by August’s sons; Pete, Frank, and Carl and the family transition began to take place from vegetable farming to flower farming as the main crops were cut-flowers in which the brothers became award winning carnation growers.
  • During the 1970’s oil-crisis Frank and Paul (sons of Frank and Carl) transitioned from being cut-flower growers to growing finished bedding crops due to the higher profitability and the lower heating costs.
  • Today our finished program of Power Flowers bedding plants, hanging baskets, herbs and perennials continues to support our family along with a national young-plant program and the contract growing and fulfillment for a highly recognized mail-order program.  We are excited to see the changes that the next generation will bring!
